Shutdowns and social distancing have changed the way we live during the pandemic in many ways. But for people who have limited mobility, including older Americans, some of these changes have made it easier for them to live healthy lives and remain active members of their communities.
At Community Health Plan of Washington (CHPW), we’re inspired by the work community organizations across the state have done during the COVID emergency:
- Sea Mar’s “Zumba Is My Therapy” program has taken their free Zumba classes online.
- SilverKite offers intergenerational online workshops for art, theatre, and more.
Some older Americans are wondering, ”When everything goes ‘back to normal,’ will these programs end?”
We think not. And the reason why is simple: Our Washington communities are strong and committed to helping each other.
Our community has always come together to serve our members.
One of CHPW’s Medicare Advantage members, a 75-year-old widower living with his family in Yakima, tested positive for COVID-19 and needed to isolate. He had Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, and diabetes. His children were worried about safely getting him groceries, since they were taking turns going to the store but had to balance this with caregiving for in-laws and their own children.
The member’s family asked CHPW about delivery options, which were limited in Yakima. Our Community Programs team used our relationships in the area to find a drive-through food bank, and even arranged pet food donations for the member’s three dogs.
Through our longstanding relationships with community partners, we were able to support this member and his family.
As we move towards a post-COVID world, we’re committed to a “new normal” that includes and supports all people.
Inspired by our communities, we work hard to meet members where they are and deliver care in a way that works for them. In 2021, CHPW expanded our post-hospital meal delivery benefit to all our Medicare Advantage members.
