We are made up of water, and our bodies use water to function. So, to survive, we need to replace the water we use up throughout the day. And, when it’s hot outside our bodies use water faster, so we need even more of it.
But it helps with more than just staying alive. Water makes our bodies stronger, our minds clearer, and our cells happier.
Here are 7 reasons to drink water and how it supports our health
1. Increases energy
Muscles need water to work correctly, and the body needs water to move nutrients and oxygen to our cells. That’s why drinking water helps boost and maintain energy during the day. When we are low on fluids, we may feel tired and weaker than usual.
2. Helps us stay positive
When we don’t drink water throughout the day, we are more likely to become confused or frustrated. But, when we drink water, our bodies may feel calmer which can support a happier mood.
3. Improves brain function
Water helps our brain send messages to the rest of our body, so our organs and cells know what to do. It also helps us use our minds to solve problems, make decisions, and understand things. When we do not drink enough water to replace the fluids we lose in a day (dehydration), it can affect our ability to think clearly and for our brain to do its job.
4. Prevents headaches
Dehydration is also a common cause of headaches. Our brain and other tissues shrink when we don’t have enough fluids. The shrinking creates pressure in the head and causes pain. The water we drink also helps us stay cool on a hot day. When we get too hot, our bodies sweat to cool off. This is also why we need more water when it’s warm outside, because we lose more water.
How to stay hydrated and drink more water
Our bodies lose and use a lot of water each day. We lose it when we sweat, go to the bathroom, and even when we just breathe. To stay hydrated and drink more water try to:
- Have a glass of water with each meal
- Carry a refillable water bottle with you
- Add a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon to your water
Everyone is different, but it is generally recommended to drink between 6 and 8 cups (8 ounces) of fluid each day.
