People who are age 65 and older are at high risk of having serious health complications from the flu.

Here’s what you need to know to help you and your loved ones stay safe and healthy this flu season.

Protect yourself and others with a senior flu shot

The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot. The flu is a serious illness – getting the flu shot helps lower the number of hospital visits and deaths. If you get your flu shot, you’ll help keep yourself from getting sick and the flu from spreading to others.

The flu spreads in the fall and winter, and the virus reaches its peak October through February. You can get a flu shot at your doctor’s office, local pharmacy, and clinics. These places have special measures in place to help keep you safe. You may also want to ask your medical provider if they have a “senior flu shot”, or one specially formulated for those 65 and over.

All Medicare plans, including CHPW Medicare Advantage plans, cover 100% of the cost of the flu shot.

So get your shot now, it’s not too late.

How to lower your risk of catching the flu

There are things you can do to help prevent getting the flu:

  • Wash your hands
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Stay home when you’re sick
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces
